Learn: the honest guide to service dogs and support animals

Service dogs

Psychiatric service dogs

Travel

Public places
- Are service dogs allowed everywhere?Almost. Service dogs may go wherever the public can go, with a few narrow exceptions. ESAs and dogs in training have no ADA access. Place by place.
- Are service dogs allowed in restaurants?Yes. Restaurants must allow service dogs even when health codes ban animals, and cannot seat you outside. ESAs have no ADA right to go in.
- Are service dogs allowed in stores?Yes. Stores, including grocery stores, must admit service dogs. The dog rides on the floor, not in the cart. Walmart and Costco policies, ESAs and SDITs.
- Are service dogs allowed in hospitals?Yes. Service dogs may stay in patient rooms and go wherever patients and visitors go. Operating rooms and burn units can exclude them. ESAs are not covered.
- Can I bring my service dog to work?Not automatically. At work a service dog is a reasonable accommodation request under ADA Title I, and your employer may ask for documentation. How it works.
- Can you bring a service dog to school?Yes. Public and most private schools must allow a student's service dog, and may need to help a child handle it. ESAs have no classroom right.
