Only trained service animals may go into the Walt Disney World and Disneyland parks. Emotional support animals, comfort animals and pets are not allowed in the parks at either resort; at Walt Disney World they are allowed only at designated pet-friendly resort hotels, and Disneyland says they are not allowed anywhere inside the Disneyland Resort. Service dogs can go on many attractions but not all, and Cast Members cannot hold your dog while you ride.
Service dogs in the parks, hotels and Disney Springs
Walt Disney World's service animal page says: "Only trained service animals are permitted inside Walt Disney World theme parks, water parks or Disney Springs." It also says: "Service animals must be under the control of the owner at all times and should remain on a leash or in a harness."
That matches the federal rule. Theme parks and hotels are public accommodations under the ADA, so a dog that is individually trained to do work or perform tasks for a person with a disability can go where guests go, and staff may ask only the two questions. Disney's resort hotels follow the same hotel rules as anywhere else: see service dogs in hotels.
Are emotional support dogs allowed at Disney World or Disneyland?
Not in the parks. The two resorts word it differently:
"Emotional support animals, comfort animals and pets are only permitted at designated, pet-friendly Walt Disney World Resort hotels."Walt Disney World, service animals
"Emotional support animals, comfort animals and pets are not allowed inside Disneyland Resort."Disneyland Resort, service animals
So at Walt Disney World an ESA can stay at a pet-friendly resort hotel, under that hotel's pet rules, but cannot come into the parks, water parks or Disney Springs. At Disneyland it cannot come in at all. An ESA letter or vest does not change either answer, because the ADA does not cover emotional support animals. More in can emotional support animals go anywhere?
Rides a service dog can't board
Some attractions are closed to service animals for the animal's safety. Walt Disney World publishes the list on its service animal page. As of 2026-09-25 it included, among others, Space Mountain, Seven Dwarfs Mine Train, Peter Pan's Flight, TRON Lightcycle / Run, Test Track, Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind, Rock 'n' Roller Coaster, Tower of Terror, Slinky Dog Dash, Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance, Expedition Everest, Avatar Flight of Passage and Kali River Rapids.
The list changes as rides open and close, so check the page the week of your trip. Disneyland publishes its own guidance for its parks.
Rider Switch, kennels and who holds the dog
Disney says "Cast Members are not able to take control of service animals." For rides your dog cannot board, Walt Disney World offers two options: Rider Switch, where one member of your party waits with the dog while the others ride and then you swap, and portable kennels. If you are traveling alone, plan which attractions you can do with your dog and which you will skip, since nobody on staff will hold the leash for you.
Service animal relief areas
Walt Disney World lists relief areas in each of its four theme parks. A few examples from its page:
- Magic Kingdom: Adventureland near Pirates of the Caribbean; Tomorrowland near the Space Mountain restrooms.
- EPCOT: World Showcase between Germany and Italy.
- Hollywood Studios: in the courtyard near First Aid; at the Toy Story Land entrance.
- Animal Kingdom: Discovery Island near First Aid.
Save the full list on your phone before you go, and plan breaks around them. Florida heat and long queues are hard on dogs, so build in shade and water too.
Does a service dog need a vest at Disney?
No. Disney's page asks for a leash or harness and control, not a vest. The Department of Justice says "The ADA does not require service animals to wear a vest, ID tag, or specific harness." Many handlers still use one at theme parks for a practical reason: crowds of children and adults who want to pet a dog. A vest or patch that says do not pet cuts down on those interruptions. It does not get any dog into a park; only training does. See are service dog vests required?
Tips for a Disney trip with a service dog
- Map your day by attraction. Mark the rides your dog can and cannot board, and the nearest relief area to each land.
- Travel with a Rider Switch partner if you want to ride the excluded attractions.
- Practice crowds, fireworks and sudden noise before the trip, not during it.
- Bring water, a collapsible bowl, paw protection for hot pavement and waste bags.
- Staying at a resort hotel? The ADA hotel rules apply: no pet fees for a service dog, and the dog must stay under your control rather than alone in the room.
- Sailing with Disney Cruise Line too? See cruises with a service dog for notice and port rules.
