Service dog training has two jobs: teaching tasks that help with a disability, and teaching the dog to behave in public. No law says who must do it or how long it takes. You can train yourself, hire a private trainer, or apply to a program. We are not a trainer and do not sell training, so this page explains the options and how to judge them.
What service dog training covers
- Tasks. Trained actions tied to the handler's disability, the part that legally makes a service dog (28 CFR 36.104). See service dog tasks.
- Obedience and control. The dog must stay under control, usually on a leash, harness or tether, and be housebroken, or a business may ask you to remove it.
- Public manners. Ignoring food, people and other dogs; settling for long periods; staying calm in noise and crowds.
- Handler skills. Reading the dog, managing it in public, and answering the two questions staff may ask.
How long is service dog training?
There is no legal minimum. IAADP's voluntary standard suggests "a minimum of one hundred twenty (120) hours of training over a period of Six Months or more". K9s For Warriors says its dogs train "for an average of six to eight months". Owner training part time, or starting from a young puppy, usually takes longer.

Service dog training cost
We quote only figures organizations publish about themselves. NEADS says it costs "nearly $45,000 to acquire, raise, train and match a Service Dog" and asks accepted clients to help by raising $12,000. K9s For Warriors says it costs "upwards of $75,000 to train each Service Dog" and charges eligible veterans nothing. How to vet a service dog trainer or program
There is no federal or state license for service dog trainers that our research found, so you have to judge for yourself. Ask:
- What tasks have you trained for disabilities like mine, and can I talk to past clients?
- What methods do you use? (Walk away from anyone who trains aggression or "protection" into a service dog.)
- What happens, and what do I pay, if my dog is not suited to the work?
- What exactly is in the written contract?
Red flags:
- Selling "certification" or registration as part of training. The DOJ says certificates sold online "do not convey any rights under the ADA".
- Promising access everywhere. No trainer can promise that; a business can still remove a dog that is out of control.
- Claiming "ADI standards" without ADI accreditation. ADI has said any organization that claims to train to "ADI standards" by using its Public Access Test or other materials without being accredited "is making deliberately misleading claims."
- Big up-front payments for a finished dog without references. The Virginia Attorney General sued one seller of $18,000 to $30,000 "service dogs" that allegedly delivered poorly trained puppies.
Psychiatric service dog training
The legal test is the same: trained tasks, not comfort. ADI's standards require its member programs to show psychiatric service dogs "facilitate friendly public interaction and do not encourage guarding, protection, or searching for a perceived threat." Finding service dog training near you
We do not train dogs or refer to trainers for a fee. For programs, Assistance Dogs International offers a Member Search tool for "finding ADI Accredited Programs across the world", and says a few accredited members "will consider working with owners and their privately trained/personally owned dogs". For local help with manners, look for classes that prepare dogs for the AKC Canine Good Citizen test, then use the vetting questions above for anyone who offers task training.
Common questions
How long is service dog training?
No law sets a length. IAADP suggests at least 120 hours over six months or more, and one large program trains for an average of six to eight months.
How much does service dog training cost?
Programs that publish figures put their own cost at tens of thousands of dollars per dog, though some place dogs at no cost. Owner training costs less money and more time.
Do service dog trainers need a license?
Our research found no federal or state license or certification for service dog trainers.
Does a trainer's certificate make my dog a service dog?
No. Training for a disability-related task makes a service dog. Paper from a trainer or website gives no rights under the ADA.
Can a program train my own dog for me?
ADI says its accredited members do not offer board and train for personally owned dogs, though a few will work with owners. Private trainers set their own terms.
